Student Discourse

Definition:

Students and teachers share responsibility for talking in carefully planned discussion-based lessons. Students are actively involved in the learning process by developing and revising new concepts through explaining, questioning, reflecting, synthesizing, and debating. 

Best Practice

Structure is present with varied, scripted opportunities for all students to participate around high level questions w consistent attention to various cognitive growth targets.

Evidence of student ownership/agency in discourse, including all students generating and posing questions using CGTs that explore each other’s ideas.

Evidence of engagement by all students in speaking/writing on task
