Teacher Clarity
Definition:
Actions taken by the teacher to make clear for students the learning objective(s), rationale(s), criteria for success, and connections to other learning present in a lesson
Best Practice
- Detailed agenda is posted and referenced by the teacher and students
during each chunk of instruction. - Clear learning objectives are stated and referenced throughout the class period and can be articulated by all students.
- The rationale for each task (its connection to the learning objective and relevance for students) is made explicit to students and can be communicated by all students.
- Teachers clearly communicate success criteria prior to students beginning a task and lead student to use criteria to guide their learning.
Examples:
Students explain how the task connects to the objective and why the learning matters to them; teacher references agenda at transitions and reinforces learning objective(s); students reference the agenda to complete work and guide learning; students read learning objective(s) chorally; closure task asks students to explain how their learning helped them accomplish the learning objective(s).
