Checks for Understanding

Definition:

Tasks or activities done throughout the lesson that ask the student to demonstrate understanding of a skill or concept; helps teachers and students know whether the learning objective(s) was achieved

Best Practice

  • Lesson design provides an appropriate balance of challenge and support, aligned to the learning objectives and student needs
  • Implemented regularly during key moments of the lesson
  • Opportunities throughout the lesson for students to summarize their learning in their own words
  • Includes feedback that promotes deeper understanding of key concepts
  • Individual and group data collected and analyzed to inform instructional decisions
