Checks for Understanding
Definition:
Tasks or activities done throughout the lesson that ask the student to demonstrate understanding of a skill or concept; helps teachers and students know whether the learning objective(s) was achieved
Best Practice
- Lesson design provides an appropriate balance of challenge and support, aligned to the learning objectives and student needs
- Implemented regularly during key moments of the lesson
- Opportunities throughout the lesson for students to summarize their learning in their own words
- Includes feedback that promotes deeper understanding of key concepts
- Individual and group data collected and analyzed to inform instructional decisions

Response Cards, Whiteboards, Collaborative Structure with Follow-Up, Classroom Discussion, Exit Ticket, KWL, Self-Rate, 3-2-1, Two-Dollar Summary, Tweet, Elevator Speech, Quick-Write, One-Sentence Summary
