Student Clarity

Definition:

The desired result when students possess a clear understanding of the objectives for learning, the purpose behind their learning, and the roadmap for the lesson. It encompasses the students’ ability to address the following fundamental questions: What am I learning? Why am I learning it? How will I know when I’ve learned it?

Clarity empowers students to engage in meaningful self-assessment, gauge their progress, and take proactive measures to address any gaps in understanding.

Best Practice

  • Learning objectives are aligned and student- friendly
  • Learning objectives are accessible, communicated, and revisited for each lesson
  • Learning objectives are understood by students
  • Students clearly demonstrate evidence of objectives for learning and the teacher provides constant feedback on student progress
  • Teachers consistently provide students with work samples/rubrics that demonstrate success
  • Students and teachers develop “criteria for success” together
  • Students self-assess current understanding of performance using the rubrics and learning progressions

Examples:

Objectives for learning are stated at the start of each lesson and referenced throughout; students can articulate the objectives, rationale, and the criteria for success; criteria for success is aligned to the objectives for learning; consistent feedback is provided on student progress and mastery.
