Social Emotional Learning

Definition:

Intentional, equitable practices that build students’ capacity for positive relationships, interactions, and self-regulation which is embedded throughout each day.

Best Practice

  • Purposeful and Cohesive Structure: Ensure that SEL activities and initiatives have a clear purpose and are seamlessly integrated into the daily routine
  • Focus on Developing Relationships: Emphasize the importance of building strong relationships between students, teachers, and peers as a foundation for social and emotional growth
  • Incorporate Research-Based Practices: Use evidence-based strategies related to the brain-state model, conflict resolution, self-regulation, and mindfulness to support students’ emotional well-being
  • Student Voice: Create opportunities for all students to have their voices heard and contribute to the SEL process
  • Gradual Progression: Start with teacher-directed activities and gradually shift towards student-led or initiated processes throughout the school year
